HOT/STUCK/DEAD shows the physical origins of the digital screen. Peering inside the machinery of displays, the artist traces the material that serves as a matrix for the typical images of psychedelic screens. Delving into the chemical principle underlying liquid crystals that exist intermediately between liquid and solid phases, this work examines the process of its creation and obsolescence within the economic structure—the standards and finitude that are viewed as (ab)normal. <핫/스턱/데드>는 주변환경에서 쉽게 마주하는 스크린의 물리적 근원을 찾아간다. 디스플레이 기계의 내부를 들여다보는 과정 속에서, 스크린을 떠올릴 때 연상되는 진부한 이미지들, 예컨대 사이키델릭한 이미지들이 단순히 ‘문화적 산물’이 아닌 스크린과 액정의 화학적인 원리에 맞닿아 있음이 드러난다. 이는 스크린의 기술적, 물리적 구조가 감각이나 정동적인 대상인 이미지를 결정짓는다는 소위 ‘매체론’적인 차원의 접근에 그치지만은 않는다. 작품은 스크린-이미지가 경제구조 안에서 여느 다른 생산품과 마찬가지로 만기의 시간, 즉 유통기한을 부여받고 있다는 점에 주목한다. 어떠한 이유에서든 스크린-이미지는 일정 시간이 되면 작동하지 않거나 고장나 폐기되거나 보수되어야만 한다. 작품은 이러한 맥락에서 스크린-이미지가 볼 수 있거나 없는 것으로 판명되는 ‘(비)정상’의 기준과 이에 결부된 자본과 시장의 논리를 추적한다. 동시에 작품은 생산 전이나 정상적인 상태를 잃을 때에야 볼 수 있게 되는 장치의 뒷면과 더불어 스크린-이미지를 볼 수 있는 것으로 생산하거나 유지하는 ‘접혀 있던’ 노동들을 가시화한다.
