LONGING

LONGING is a two-channel video which juxtaposes many running scenes in films with the video of a rehabilitation patient who is constantly on a treadmill. 'Running Scene' is a language of cinematography that emphasizes the protagonist as a center of the world by tracking the camera along the fast-moving target. The protagonists in the films enjoy freedom, run away from danger, and often with drama and madness. The work removes the original stories out of the films, which ends up leaving a nostalgic mood to the viewers. The discordant emotion felt by the film protagonist and the viewers resembles the discordant of emotion between the patient who suffers from the repetitive running on the treadmill, and the carer who wishes the patient to be cured and end this situation as fast as possible.

<LONGING >은 영화 속 주인공이 달리는 장면과 러닝머신 위에서 끊임없이 재활훈련을 받는 한 환자의 모습을 함께 병치시킨 2채널 영상이다. '러닝-씬'은 대게 카메라가 빠르게 움직이는 대상을 따라 함께 이동하며 화면 속 달리는 대상이 곧 그 세계의 중심임을 극대화하는 연출이다. 달리는 주인공은 자유롭고, 무방비하며, 빠르게 위험으로 부터 도망가고, 때때로 미쳐 날뛴다. 영화의 앞뒤 맥락을 모두 제거하고 특정 장면만을 수집해놓은 작업은 마치 인터넷의 짜깁기 뮤비처럼 이미지를 향유하며 알 수 없는 향수와 정서를 일으킨다. 그러나 이미지가 불러일으키는 감상자의 감정은 정작 그 대상, 혹은 주인공이 느끼는 감정과는 다를 터이다. 이는 러닝머신 위 매우 반복적으로, 그러나 아주 느리게 행해지는 치료의 과정에서 환자 본인의 느끼게 되는 고통과는 반대로 매우 지루해하거나 어떻게든 빨리 회복되었으면 바라는 주변인의 애타는 감정의 간극과도 닮아있다.
