A Few Premises of Walking with Two Legs
2-channel video, color, sound, 10min, 2021

Bipedalism, referring to the ability to walk upright, is one of the defining stages in the process of human evolution. Moving forward with two feet symbolizes the autonomy and independence of humanity thus far. Composed of two-channel video loop and lecture performance, A few premises of walking with two legs delves into the normativity unrevealed in ‘walking,’ such an ordinary gesture to anyone, according to the materialized and cognitive borders dividing the normal and abnormal of the physical body, as well as the internal and external faces of the institution.

The artist juxtaposes videos of a performer walking around and touring the inner and outer spaces of Nam-Seoul Museum of Art, with numerous high and steep stairways, on two aligned screens. Here she sees the museum as an institution operating within the criteria of normativity, while inner and outer spaces of the museum act as metaphors for the normal and abnormal of the physical body that are once again decided by certain criteria. Responding to the flow of rhythm composed by walking in and out on two screens, a narration of the questions from evaluation criteria for determining disability rating, modified Barthel Index (MBI), and cognitive impairment spreads out from the videos. Although the division of normal and abnormal is seemingly strict, the questions read aloud prove the vagueness in them, adding even more suspicion as to the conditions of the physical body that we recognize as being normal. In the following lecture performance, she examines bipedal walking and its conditions according to historical, physical, and scientific perspectives. Pointing out the emergence of devices and technology that compensate for defects of the body, the performance reveals the crossed relationship of machine and the body equipped with those devices. While presenting that are not smooth, the artist shares her observations and critical thoughts on the correlation between technology and defects of the body, as well as the inherent power surrounding mobility rights, and body/labor force that must be restored.
